Tuition Assistance (Bursary program)
Armbrae’s tuition assistance program is a needs-based bursary program for domestic students in Grades 6 through 12. The Tuition Assistance Committee reviews applications with a focus on a family’s financial need and the student’s potential to contribute to the school community. Because funding for tuition assistance and scholarships is limited, the school’s enrollment priorities are also a key consideration when determining awards.
Need based tuition assistance (bursary) requests Armbrae Academy’s tuition assistance program is a need-based bursary for students in Grades 6-12, with the school’s Tuition Assistance Committee reviewing applications based on financial need and the student’s potential to contribute to the school. As we have a limited amount of funding for Tuition Assistance and Scholarship offerings; the enrollment priorities of the school are also a consideration when offering funding Awards.
Applications for bursary funding are processed through Apple Financial Services, and it is recommended to apply early due to rolling deadlines and budget constraints. The school also offers scholarship opportunities which are merit based and outside of any demonstrated need related to the family’s fiscal situation.
Families who are awarded bursary funding must file yearly with Apple Financial to ensure awards can be reviewed. The deadline to submit yearly requests for returning Armbrae families is February 28th of the current school year.
General tuition assistance (bursaries) - new students
Eligibility: Students in Grades 6 through 12, based on demonstrated financial need.
Application process:
Domestic families (Canadian citizenship or PR status) must complete an application with Apple Financial Services. Apple Financial analyzes a family’s financial resources and provides recommendations to the Armbrae’s Tuition Assistance Committee.
Awarding process:
Awards are based on a family’s need and the school’s available funds. Priority is given to families who meet the criteria and whose children show the greatest potential to contribute to Armbrae’s mission. Funds are awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is advised. A maximum award of 60% of school fees (needs based) would be awarded.
Confidentiality:
All requests are treated with the utmost confidentiality. If you wish to discuss your family’s financial circumstances, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Admissions team (Suzanne Morrison smorrison@armbrae.ns.ca). Families are expected to hold any awards offered in confidence. Failure to do so could result in removal of tuition assistance granted.
FAQ
Are there limits to the amount of bursary fundings once the fiscal picture is reviewed?
A: Armbrae expects families receiving tuition assistance to contribute financially toward their child's education. Accordingly, tuition assistance awards are capped at 60% of school fees. Eligibility is determined based on demonstrated need as evidenced by the Apple Financial application.
At what grade may I seek tuition assistance from Armbrae Academy?
A: Qualifying families with students entering Grades 6 through 12 may apply for needs-based tuition assistance.
Do you disclose how much Apple Financial has recommended for our family?
A: Funding decisions are informed by Apple Financial’s assessment of a family’s demonstrated need. This data is strictly confidential and is not always disclosed to the family. The Tuition Assistance Committee aims to ensure a sustainable financial partnership with the school, ensuring that funding levels do not create undue financial hardship. Cases where funding needs cannot be fully met will be discussed with the family via telephone.
How do I appeal a decision if funding is offered for my child?
A: Tuition assistance is an annual process, and families must reapply each year. Once a decision is made, funding levels typically remain the same for the duration of that school year. Appeals are only considered in the event of a significant and unforeseen financial emergency. Otherwise, changes to a family’s financial situation—whether an increase or decrease in need—will be captured and reflected in the following year’s application.
Does Armbrae provide waiver codes to apply for tuition assistance?
A: Waiver codes may be offered in exceptional fiscal circumstances. Please reach out to smorrison@armbrae.ns.ca for eligibility.
How will I know if we are receiving an offer of admission and funding for my child or children?
Initial notification of funding will be made via telephone, followed by written confirmation. Please note that the funding award is contingent upon admission, and both offers must be accepted by the specified deadline.
Entrance Scholarships
A: Entrance scholarships are competitive, one-year merit awards that may be granted to qualifying students upon admission. Separate from needs-based bursaries, these awards recognize exceptional academic results and the potential to enrich the Armbrae community. The Admissions Committee conducts a selective review of each applicant’s holistic profile, seeking excellence in key areas such as academics, the arts, athletics, debate, and leadership.
Selection Process & Criteria There is no separate application for entrance scholarships. Instead, the Admissions Committee automatically considers candidates based on the comprehensive materials submitted during the standard enrollment process. To be considered for an award, families must simply indicate their interest in scholarship funding on the student’s initial application for admission.
The Committee’s review is based on:
- Academic Excellence: A review of the student's current and previous two years of academic reports.
- Student CV: A summary of the applicant’s achievements, extracurricular abilities, and awards.
- Student Essay: A personal submission by the student. Please note that the use of AI in drafting this essay is strictly prohibited.
Notification and Acceptance Selected recipients will be notified of their funding award via telephone, followed by formal written confirmation. Please note that scholarship awards are contingent upon admission; both the offer of admission and the funding award must be accepted by the specified deadline to remain valid.
